Safety Awareness Month!
~Get Smart, Be Safe, & Save~

Safety glasses/goggles are just as important as helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads and are recommend for all sports whether you have a prescription or not. A cyclist would not mount a bike with out his helmet nor would a football player hit the field without his helmet. So why do so many participate in sports with out their safety glasses?

Glasses and goggles that are worn for protective eye wear are tested and marked between two standards, ASTM and ANSI. The ASTM F803 Standard covers all ball/stick/bat sports. If protective eye wear is required for your sport (i.e. women's lacrosse, racquetball) make sure that the sport is independently certified for that sport. Normally, it will be listed on the goggles tag.  But if the sport does not require eye wear such as soccer, baseball, basketball, etc. then it will not be one of the  sports listed on the tag of the eye wear but will be covered under the blanket ASTM standard so it doesn't have to specifically list your sport if eyewear is not required. Here are some injury statistics:
  •           12% of annual cost of medical care is for injuries, and 30 million people go to the emergency room (40,000) of those are for eye injuries
  •       Every 13 minutes a person has an eye injury serious enough to require a trip to the ER
  •             90% of all eye injuries can be prevented with sports protective eye wear.
  •       Healthy People 2020 is recommending the use of sports protective eye wear to prevent eye injuries

Don't be part of a statistic, order your safety glasses today and receive 10% off. Discount only includes safety glasses that meet ASTM and ANSI safety requirement. Limited time only: Available through the month of April!

Hilco

Above is a picture of the Metrix, one of the many safety rated sport glasses. As explained above, if the sport requires sport glasses then the glasses has to be specifically tested. Hilco's safety sport glasses have a ASTM testing for all ball sports and meet the testing for girls lacrosse.
Here are a few styles of hilco that are great for sports:
- T-Zone  (helmet adaptable)
- Jam'n (kids size/ helmet adaptable)
- Zoom
- Metrix

Rec-Specs

The Sport goggles that have been tested and meet the ASTM standards are great for racket and ball sports but do not meet the individual testing for girls lacrosse. Rec Specs have a great variety of style to choose from. Depending if on an individual preference there are styles that have a full wrap around strap and are more of a goggle or full hard frame to style like glasses.
The MX 20, MX 21, Morph 1, and Morph 3 are all recommended for children under the age 12. For Helmet compatible the Rec Specs carries the Helmet Specs 3.

What is the ANSI safety rating?

The ANSI rating is an occupational/safety rating. This standard is not as high as the ball sports standard but covers sports like hunting and shooting. They are also often used for the military or for factory workers, contractors, etc. that just need protection from debris.  They don't require the same thickness of lens as the ASTM standard and the frames are typically not made of as high of an impact material as the ASTM rated frames.  If you are doing low eye injury risk sports like cycling, golf, skiing, etc. you may not need the full ASTM protection and an ANSI standard may be ok for you. For ball/bat sports though, the ASTM standard is still recommended.
ASTM & ANSI tested Brands:
- Hilco
- Rec Specs
- Wiley X

*note not all styles meet the standards & qualify for discount. To see if your style qualifies check out the information section located at the bottom of each frames page*

A Reminder of why we need to protect our eyes

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Atlanta Braves minor league manager Luis Salazar has lost an eye after he was struck in the face by a line drive while watching a spring training game.
Braves general manager Frank Wren said Wednesday that doctors were unable to save Salazar's left eye after the accident March 9. The former major league player is otherwise recovering from his injuries and expects to manage Lynchburg of the Class A Carolina League this season.
The 54-year-old Salazar was standing against the railing on the top step of the dugout during a game between the Braves and St. Louis Cardinals when Brian McCann fouled a ball in his direction. Salazar was unable to get out of the way and fell head-first back into the dugout.
The game was stopped for almost 20 minutes so Salazar could be airlifted to an Orlando hospital. He regained consciousness on the way and was treated for multiple facial fractures, but doctors were unable to save his left eye.
"In the big picture, and that's what we have to keep in mind, this is a good outcome," Wren said. "He's alive."
McCann was badly shaken and didn't return when the game resumed. He visited Salazar in the hospital and has stayed in touch.
"It's a crazy, crazy thing that happened," McCann said the day after Salazar was struck. "So unfortunate. You feel hopeless."
Wren said that Salazar would spend about a week at home in Boca Raton, Fla., and then return to Braves camp at some point this spring. The minor-league season begins April 7 and Salazar had been serving as an extra major league coach when struck.
"Doctors have told us and him that there is no reason why in about four or six weeks, he can't manage his team as he anticipated," Wren said.
Salazar is in his first year with the Braves organization.

Ski Goggle Fogging Question

Here is a chat transcript about single versus double lenses and fogging with ski goggles and prescritpion.

shannen: Hi, How can I help you today?
Visitor: I'm looking for a ski goggle that has a single prescription lens
shannen: The way the ski goggles work is there is a piece that carries the prescription and snaps inside the goggle. There is no technology for a full shield type goggle lens to have a prescription made into it. The only other option is for a sunglass type with foam where it has two separate lenses for the prescription to be built directly into the lens.
Visitor: The problem with two lenses is that the inner one tends to fog when one stops skiing.
shannen: You'll have more tendency to fog with a single lens than a double.
shannen: The point of a double lens it to prevent fogging.
shannen: The more temperature difference between the inside of the lens and the outside of the lens causes the fogging.
Visitor: Ok.  What are my options for a prescription solution?
shannen: So with a single lens, you have a larger difference between outside and inside temperature. The double lens provides a layer between your hot face and the cold air preventing fogging.
shannen: The best thing for fogging is the Smith Turbo goggle with the prescription insert.
shannen: The Turbo is a microfan inside the goggle that constantly generates wind to keep the lenses defogged.
shannen: The more airflow, the less chance of fogging. That is why you fog when you stop. You don't have the airflow anymore.
shannen: The fan keeps airflow going even when you stop.
Visitor: does it require a battery?
shannen: It does. It takes one AAA battery.
shannen: battery pack is integrated into the strap.
Visitor: Are there different types of turbo fan goggles?
shannen: Different styles? yes.
Visitor: Which style so you recommend?
shannen: Style wise is just personal preference. They fit different sized head as well. And then the Knowledge one is designed to fit over glasses.
Visitor: It looks like smith has several options for the lens types.  Which is best?
shannen: Depends on lighting conditions. The Ignitor is there best all around lens for various lighting conditions. The Sensor Mirror is more for low light and the Platinum mirror is more for bright light.
Visitor: From the pictures I've seen there are two options for the lenses, an insert and a attached (direct).  Either will work with the ignitor.
shannen: no there is no direct in option for the prescription lenses. There is the insert by itself with no lenses, then the insert with us making the prescription lenses. Those are the only two prescription options.
Visitor: So there is only one type of insert lens not two types that I was led to believe
shannen: no one type of insert.
shannen: I see on their site they offer the Uvex goggle. We used to offer that but it has been discontinued by the manufacturer so nothing like that left. If they have some it is old stock. It was discontinued about 3 years ago.
Visitor: Ok so how much is the Smith Phenom Turbo Fan model with the ignitor lense and does it come with the fog free coating?
shannen: You have to add the fog free coating for $65 more.
shannen: Goggle is $170.
Visitor: So the total cost is?
shannen: So $170 for goggle, $115 for insert with Rx lesnes and if you add the anti-fog coating, it would be $65 more for a total of $350
Visitor: Can I purchase these on-line?
shannen: yes.
shannen: http://www.sporteyes.biz/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=713
Visitor: Thank you Shannen, I'll get my prescription from my doctor tomorrow.
shannen: you're welcome.
